Bio

Dr. Rob Whyte is a member of the Department of Anesthesia at McMaster University and an anesthesiologist at Hamilton Health Sciences. He is currently Clerkship Chair and Electives Chair in the Undergraduate MD Program and the Director of the newly formed Clinical Placement Liaison Office (CPLO) in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

Dr. Whyte attended the University of Waterloo as an undergraduate student in Kinesiology from 1991 to 1994 and then entered the MD Program at McMaster University. In 1997, he began his anesthesia residency at McMaster. Upon completion of his residency program in 2002, he joined McMaster’s Department of Anesthesia.

Dr. Whyte has consistently been involved in medical education. He began tutoring in the MD Program as a resident. He worked with Drs. Wong and Peachey in developing a novel simulation-based anesthesia clerkship rotation. Following this project, he became the Anesthesia Undergraduate Program Director and contributed to the remodeling of the new COMPASS Clerkship, including the development of the simulation-based Clerkship Orientation. He was subsequently appointed Clerkship Chair, demonstrating a strong commitment to distributed medical education and expansion, professionalism in medicine, and interprofessional education.

In 2008, Dr. Whyte began the development of the CPLO, supporting McMaster’s increasing commitment to distributed medical education. Extensive work is underway to enhance the coordination of clinical placement activity across McMaster’s expanding clinical placement network. Dr. Whyte has also represented McMaster provincially on DME issues and nationally on issues related to medical student electives. He began his Masters of Education at the University of Toronto (OISE) in 2007, pursuing an interest in the intersection of culture and medical education.
